The Mohican Sailing Club is a non-profit cooperative organization built, maintained and managed entirely by club members. Founded in 1945, the purpose of the club remains to bring to the area the means and facilities for family participation in sailing and one-design sailboat racing. The club is a member of the Inter-lake Yachting Association (ILYA) and, therefore, its members are entitled to privileges at other member clubs, mostly in the Great Lakes area.
All sailboats are welcome at Mohican Sailing Club. One-design fleets at the club include Inter-lakes, Jet14’s, Thistles, Lasers and Sunfish. The club owns several Sunfish and a number of Optimist Dinghies for members and their families to use, and there are normally several used boats for sale by members.
Races are held each Sunday during the summer. Each member is asked to serve a Sunday each season as either Race Chairman or Safety Chairman. Families are also asked to chair one of the Sunday Dinner Committees. The club owns two pontoon boats that are used to support the races. One is equipped with a high-capacity water pump to assist swamped boats should the need arise. At the conclusion of the racing on Sundays, members participate in a potluck dinner. Other racing highlights include invitational regattas, which the club hosts several times during racing season. These events typically attract competitors from throughout the Midwest and East Coast.
Club members are eager to teach sailing to those interested in learning, both youth and adult, and will develop plans based on individual needs, abilities and goals.
Family parties, cookouts and other social activities are a regular part of the schedule during the sailing season. The clubhouse is open to members year round for individual use and available for member-sponsored private gatherings. Many members have chosen the Club as a location for wedding receptions and graduation parties.
The club is governed by a Board of Trustees and Officers who are elected annually by club members. The club goal is to have all members and their families actively participate in its operation, maintenance and activities.
The clubhouse contains a full galley. There is a card room; a locker room for boating accessories and life jackets; four restrooms, two with showers and a large ballroom with screened porch overlooking Charles Mill Lake. Down at the lake there is a swimming beach, a concrete launching ramp, electric boat hoist and over 300 feet of dock.
